Cameras are an amazing piece of equipment to work with, not only because of all the fun extras but because of how much control you actually have over something so complex. We’ve gotten into some digital cameras, and lenses are a great place to pick back up. Being knowledgeable about all your equipment is crucial, so you can have the best outcome. There is a different lens for every type of picture you want to take, and this is good to know not only for job opportunities in the photography field, but for causal photography as well.

Your most standard lens has a 35-70mm focal range, and the most common lens is a fixed 50mm lens. This lens is used for simple photography, hints standard lens, which is best used for street photography and documentaries.

 

Wide angle lens

Next is your wide angle lens which is 20mm which can be 20mm and under. With dawn of digital cameras and new format called APS-C format, businesses have started making specific lenses for this type of format.

Third is your medium telephoto portrait lens, and its range is 80mm-135mm. This camera is traditionally used for portrait photography because a fixed lens at this length is perfect for head and shoulder shots. This are also specialist lenses but are surprisingly affordable.  An example would be: The Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 Macro USM lens is an example of a one of these types of lenses.

Fourth is your telephoto lens, which is basically any lens with the focal length between 135mm-300mm. Businesses make a large range of lenses in this specific range, they are also extremely expensive. An example would be: Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM

Last but especially not least is the specialist lens; there are 3 different types of specialist lenses to choose from. Super telephoto, which has a focal length of 300mm and are used for nature and sport photography. (Nikon AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8G is an example).

Next in the specialist lenses is the Macro lens, which is used for small close up objects and still life photos. Finally is the fish eye lens, which distorts your view by magnifying the center, making it look like a fish eye.
