Work pays off

I have continued to talk about Sally Mann because she is a huge reason I decided to blog about photography in the first place, she inspires me as a photographer to be passionate and do what I feel in my heart, not what society expects me to do or say. In the future Mann will be brought back up when I get to the controversial aspect of photography.

Her works say a lot about her and not only her life but her husband and children’s life as well. She’s composed around 10 books or so, some are better than others and the first one I’d like to mention is her book, “Second Sight.” This was her first book according to Sally Mann, Inside and Out, which was published in 1984; the pictures represent abstract compositions, landscapes and portraits.

Her book “At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women,” were a collection of photographs of twelve-year-old girls who were approaching adulthood. To be a young female at this time was opened up a world of possibilities, and endless excitement about growing up. It’s kind of an awkward stage for girls, but that’s a part of life all women go through, she’s sharing her experience and understanding of life with us, in what I believe is the most natural form possible. “These girls still exist in an innocent world in which a pose is only a pose– what adults make of that pose may be the issue.

“The consequences of this misunderstanding can be real; destitution, abuse, unwanted pregnancy. Mann does not deny this reality, but records it, both in the faces of her subjects and in written stories that accompany thirteen of the portraits, adding another dimension to our understanding of “childhood.”

Her next book I’d like to discuss is “Immediate Family,” according to Aperture, it was published in 1990. This is one of my favorites because her subjects are her small children, same goes for a lot of her books. This book brought about a little controversy, but we will get to that later, her photos are breath taking and always emotional. She made sure to get pictures of them sick, in pain, or just naked.  Expressing the notion that no lives are perfect or pain free, we all deal with insecurities about our body, but Mann taught her children how to embrace every aspect of life, by capturing that moment with a camera.
